Resident Evil 2 remake is Capcom’s biggest launch since 2017

Resident Evil 2 – number one again

For the first time since 1998 Resident Evil 2 is number one in the UK, as Super Mario Bros. U is knocked form the top spot.

Resident Evil 2 has, unsurprisingly, gone straight in at number one in the UK sales charts, becoming Capcom’s biggest UK launch since Resident Evil 7 in January 2017 – beating last year’s Monster Hunter: World.

As ever though it’s essentially impossible to quantify exactly how well the game has done because the UK charts do not include digital sales (even though they’re supposed to start at some point this year).

Sales of Resident Evil 2 were 18% down on Resident Evil 7, which at first seems a little disappointing. But that’s a much lower drop than many sequels last year, which saw falls of 50% or more from their previous entry.

That means there’s a good chance Resident Evil 2 actually did better than 7, despite only being a remake and coming out on a Friday rather than a Tuesday.

With the Resident Evil franchise still closely associated with the PlayStation brand, 74% of sales were on Sony’s console.

The disparity with the Xbox One is likely to be even wider with next week’s sure fire number one, as Kingdom Hearts III prepares for release tomorrow.

It’s the only major retail release this week too, with the subsequent week also having no major releases. But that’s all before the madness of February 15, when Far Cry: New Dawn, Metro Exodus, and Crackdown 3 all release on the same day…
